LEDs are the future!

On October 10th, 2008, in Luxembourg, the EU energy ministers adopted a decision to phase out the sale of all incandescent and poorly-performing light bulbs by 2010 for the entire territory of the union.

A similar step had already been adopted by the governments of Australia and the Philippines where the ban will also come into force as of 2010; in the USA this change is expected to come into force somewhere between 2012 – 2014.
WWF experts have calculated that a full replacement of existing household light fixtures with energy saving luminaires will reduce energy costs for lighting with 60% and CO2 emissions will go down with 30 million tonnes per year /for the EU/ .

LED bulbs – the future? – the question is answered by the European Commissioner for Energy:
“Light emitting diodes (LEDs) are another type of energy-saving light bulb that offers even more advantages. As efficient as compact fluorescent bulbs, they don't contain mercury and have a much longer life.”
